Project Save 2014
Project SAVE is a PR campaign organized by students of Diploma in Communication Semester 6 from Taylor's Lakeside University, seeking to raise awareness for animal abuse. This project is fully devoted on spreading the awareness of SPCA's cause for animal rights. Aside that, SAVE also aims to educate the public of the organization's key concerns that are happening and are rampant.
This project was officially launched on the 15th of February 2014 by the Public Relations Project class at Taylor's Lakeside University. Our team also works hand-in-hand with SPCA for this project in order to help educate the public on the problems faced by animal organizations and animals themselves, as well as to raise funds.
Project SAVE stands for:
(S)pay, don't stray
(A)dopt, don't buy
(V)olunteer your time
(E)ducate your mind
Throughout this entire PR project, my role in this project is the Assistant Project Manager, helping out the Project Manager (Putrisa Binti Mohamed Rafie) to oversee and make sure the entire operation goes smoothly. While being appointed as the Assistant Project Manager, I am also responsible for a few minor roles in team such as becoming the graphic designer, activity planner, sponsor look-up and meeting up with our client (SPCA) at Ampang Jaya.
While trying to maintain a leadership role for the team, I constantly try to balance my virtue ethics by making sure I'm not too laid back while at the same time not being too stern with the group. Being too extreme on either side will lower down my credibility to influence anyone. As a part of the Project team leader, it is important to be retain a diplomatic relationship in a group decision-making by giving everyone a fair chance to voice out their ideas/suggestion/opinions. We have also to be understanding in some situations where our teammates will face complication in executing their plans.
In term of sponsorship, I managed to get in contact and convinced a few notable people in Ipoh to fund for both our event and SPCA themselves. It is never easy to get money out of people especially if they are not aware of our causes which is why it is important for the PR team to generate the much needed hype to get the ball rolling. It also takes a lot of courage to be looking around for people for sponsor especially when we are doing this on behalf of Taylor's and SPCA. Failing to perform properly would not only damage our client's reputation, it will also create a perception that Taylor's are not capable to guide their students professionally.
During the main event from 5-8th May, I've been in charge to handle my Quizzes booth. Once in a while, I will feel that I'm acting according to the utilitarianism act around the participants by giving them a slightly higher chance to win the event. It may not always be the right thing to do since I've already set the regular rules and regulation but if it's going to create a lot of happiness for them, then why not? Actions are usually considered right if they are being used for the greatest happiness of the greatest number of people.
Also, the boys (including me) in Project SAVE are no doubt the ones that falls under the deontology theory as we are duty-bounded as guys to carry all the prizes and gift back and forth from block C.9 everyday during the event. There is really nothing wrong with this and we don't really mind about it but this situation is certainly related to categorical imperative. In modern society, the guys are usually obligated to do the heavy lifting because the universal law has always been set this way and it makes us feel morally right to uphold the tradition.
Most of us were always extremely busy during the event but I will still try to walk around once a while to see if anyone requires my assistance. Simple things like helping them to buy a drink and temporarily helping out at their booth could really help them a lot. Overall, Project SAVE has been an eye opening experience for me as it teaches me a lot of things that is applicable in real working environment. Ranging from event management, persuasion, human resource and even team building skill. Communication amongst one another is the key aspect to get any job done quickly and effectively. It has been really fun to run our own chosen campaign all by ourselves with Ms. Karmini being our guide and mentor. The fact that our client, Ms. Helen from SPCA commending us on our last day for our fine work is what satisfies everyone the most. Everyone's hardwork and dedication to make Project SAVE a go has finally bear fruit and this will remains in everyone's memory for a very long time, thank you.
